Ethan is a low-key senior that is just looking for a loving family to call his own. He appears to be a Shepherd/Chow mix, with the characteristic black tongue. With his coat and coloring, we think he looks a bit like a tiny lion! He has a very pretty coat, but will shed in some seasons. He doesn't exactly love being brushed, but will tolerate it within limits.
Ethan spends most of his time napping on his foster's bedroom floor, never wanting (and even disliking) being on the furniture. He is generally very low energy, spending majority of his time sleeping and finding a toy to toss around occasionally. Tennis balls are his favorite. He has some mobility issued though so he doesn't play too much. Ethan can also be a bit grumpy at times, and should be handled accordingly. He fusses and whines over too much cuddling, but loves getting head scratches. Those are his favorite and he comes up to beg for more! He will allow his foster to pick him up, but not fail to complain. Ethan will be best suited with a somewhat experienced dog owners and with no young kids in the family.
He likes going for walks, though we limit them given his arthritis. He also has a tear in one leg, though the vet didn't feel a surgery at his age would be advisable. He gets around just fine, just slowly. He may benefit from some pain meds if needed, but we have not been doing that since he is a master at pill detection, no matter how good you are at hiding them. He has done fine without them. He is housetrained and very good about coming up to you when he needs to go out. He may ask to be let out once in the middle of the night, depending on the schedule. Guess all seniors can have similar issues :) He lives with 4 other dogs and does well with them. But he may not like high-energy dogs being too rambunctious around him.
Ethan is neutered, up to date on his shots and was treated for heartworms, but now clear. He does have some eye issues and currently gets eye drops. His next follow up is in 3 months, but it is possible he may need meds permanently. He has decent vision (it improved as the meds started working), but he can't hear very well. Not a problem really since he doesn't generally get into anything.
If you are looking for a chill companion dog, Ethan may be a great addition!
